June 14, 2020: “The Sabbath and the Lord’s Day”

Preparing for Worship

Our world is still in the grip of a pandemic, though here in Manitoba we are experiencing some easing of restrictions. Racism and injustice have been much on our minds in recent weeks as well. As a church we heard this past week that Pastor Michael will be resigning at the end of the year and beginning a new ministry as Executive Minister for Mennonite Church Manitoba in January 2021. While we rejoice along with our sibling MCM churches at this news, it has also brought feelings of sadness and grief to the surface for us.

We gather today in need of rest and renewal. We respond in faith and hope to Jesus’ invitation for us to come to him, for we are weary and burdened. We follow Jesus our Good Shepherd, leading us to green pastures and quiet waters. As we do this today and in the days to come, Jesus will bring rest to our souls. God will restore our souls.

Call to Worship

Lawrence S. welcomes us and calls us to worship together on this, the Lord’s Day:

Songs of Praise

Join in singing along to HWB 36 God of Our Strength, accompanied by Irene S. and Michael P. You can use the songbook or follow the lyrics below.

God of our strength, enthroned above
The source of life, the fount of love
O let devotion’s sacred flame
Our souls awake to praise thy name

God of our strength
We wait on thee
Our sure defense forever be

To thee we lift our joyful eyes
To thee on wings of faith we rise
Come thou, and let thy courts on earth
Ring out thy praise in days of mirth

God of our strength, from day to day
Direct our thoughts and guide our way
Oh, may our hearts united be
In sweet communion, Lord, with thee

God of our strength, on thee we call
God of our hope, our light, our all
Thy name we praise, thy love adore
Our rock, our shield, forevermore

Let’s continue singing with HWB 5 There Is a Place of Quiet Rest, accompanied by Irene S. and Michael P. You can use the songbook or follow the lyrics below.

Loretta L., “His Eye is On the Sparrow”

There is a place of quiet rest,
near to the heart of God,
a place where sin cannot molest,
near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, bless’d Redeemer,
sent from the heart of God,
hold us, who wait before thee,
near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet,
near to the heart of God,
a place where we our Saviour meet,
near to the heart of God.

There is a place of full release,
near to the heart of God,
a place where all is joy and peace,
near to the heart of God.

Please continue this act of worship in support of the church’s ongoing ministries even though we are not meeting in person. You can mail a cheque to the church office. You can contact the church office or Randy S. and he will come pick it up. Also, you can donate as a bill payment if you have an Access Credit Union account, either in person at the credit union or online. For online giving in this way, please see the information here.

Community Life & Prayer

For announcements related to our church community, see the eBulletin emailed to those on the church email list. You can also stay updated by checking the church Facebook page and this website.

This week in our prayers we especially remember:

  • Our church as we process the news of Pastor Michael’s future plans. May Church Council have wisdom as they lead us through the upcoming changes. May Michael experience rest and renewal during his two-month sabbatical and be ready to help prepare us for pastoral transition when he returns for the fall.
  • Those among us facing significant personal challenges, both concerns shared publicly and burdens borne privately. Let us “always persevere in supplication for all the saints” (Eph 6:18).
  • Those among us with special reasons to rejoice. Let us “rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess 5:16-18).
  • May we all experience both rest and renewal in the coming summer months, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matt 11:28-30).

Lawrence S. offers this prayer for us today:

Prayer Song

Let us continue in prayer as we sing HWB 352 Gentle Shepherd, Come and Lead Us, accompanied by Loretta T. and Michael P. You can use the songbook or follow the lyrics below.

Gentle Shepherd, come and lead us
For we need you to help us find our way
Gentle Shepherd, come and feed us
For we need your strength from day to day

There’s no other we can turn to
Who can help us face another day
Gentle Shepherd, come and lead us
For we need you to help us find our way

Scripture Reading

Our Scripture reading this morning is from Colossians 2:1-19, read for us by Lawrence S. As we listen to our Scripture reading, and as we reflect on it together in our children’s focus and meditation, may we have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to us as a church.

Children’s Focus

Erin K. shares this for the young (and the young at heart!) among us: our friend Douglas talking about “sabbath” as “rest.” If you listen to Michael’s sermon after, pay attention to the ways Michael and Douglas agree about “the Sabbath” and the ways they think differently about it.

Michael P. shares this meditation for us today: “The Sabbath and the Lord’s Day.”

Moment of Reflection

Spend a few moments reflecting on our Scripture text and its interpretation among us. The good news of God has been proclaimed among us this morning.

  • How have you heard God’s good news for you? for others in your life? for our world?
  • What will you do this week to live out God’s good news?

Song of Response

Let us join together in singing STS 16 Peace Before Us, accompanied by Michael P. You may use the songbook or follow the lyrics below.

Peace before us, peace behind us
Peace under our feet
Peace within us, peace over us
Let all around us be peace

Love before us, love behind us
Love under our feet
Love within us, love over us
Let all around us be love

Light before us, light behind us
Light under our feet
Light within us, light over us
Let all around us be light

Christ before us, Christ behind us
Christ under our feet
Christ within us, Christ over us
Let all around us be Christ

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Lawrence S. offers this benediction for us as we leave this time of worship together:

Sending Song

Join in singing STJ 27 God of the Bible, accompanied by Loretta T. and Michael P.  You can use the songbook or follow the lyrics below.

Adalynne P.’s colouring page from last week’s service!

God of the Bible, God in the Gospel
Hope seen in Jesus, hope yet to come
You are our center, daylight or darkness
Freedom or prison, you are our home

Fresh as the morning, sure as the sunrise
God always faithful, you do not change
Fresh as the morning, sure as the sunrise
God always faithful, you do not change

God in our struggles, God in our hunger
Suffering with us, taking our part
Still you empow’r us, mothering Spirit
Feeding sustaining, from your own heart

Those without status, those who are nothing
You have made royal, gifted with rights
Chosen as partners, midwives of justice
Birthing new systems, lighting new lights

Not by your finger, not by your anger
Will our world order change in a day
But by your people, fearless and faithful
Small paper lanterns, lighting the way

Hope we must carry, shining and certain
Through all our turmoil, terror and loss
Bonding us gladly one to the other
Till our world changes facing the cross
